Dark Was the Night

February 11th, 2009 by alison

I don’t think I’ve ever been this excited about a music compilation. So many of my favorite artists all in one lovely package. Feist, Andrew Bird, Bon Iver, Cat Power, The National, Antony, Sufjan Stevens, Arcade Fire, The New Pornographers, Spoon, Kevin Drew, Yo La Tengo, The Books, Jose Gonzales, Beirut, Iron and Wine, The Decemberists and Grizzly Bear to name a few.

It comes out next Tuesday and the money goes towards raising awareness about HIV and AIDS so you might want to actually pay for this one.

Music suggestions please

January 25th, 2009 by alison

Now that I am sitting at my computer for 9+ hours a day working and no longer have Julia’s iPod to discover new stuff on I am in need of some new music. How can I get sick of my 46 GB of music? I don’t know. But help me out, leave a comment of some new (or old) artist you’ve been listening to a lot lately that you think I should check out. Any genre of music will do.

In return here’s a mix of what I was listening to last summer. It’s a bit old but I’ll post a more recent mix soon. I did put thought into the order so when you throw it into an iTunes playlist it’s worth taking a minute to sort it.

Thanks!

Ane Brun is one of our very favorite musicians and this is one of our very favorite (unofficial) music videos.

Music to Sand to: Senegal Fast Food; Bought & Sold

November 3rd, 2008 by julia

This morning I sanded. Dust mask on, earbuds in, music up loud. Noise canceling headphones to drown out the buzz of the electric sander.

This is pretty much the only Dar song I like. I really like it.

Rise at twilight. watch the sun come up. make a fire. start turnin’ out crepes. back to bed. reading. a gentle day. These songs capture the mood.

Dylan: Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid

October 8th, 2008 by julia

In 1973, Dylan wrote and recorded the soundtrack for a western film, titled Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid. “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” was the only Pat Garrett track to emerge as a hit; the remaining soundtrack fell into obscurity and is now out of print in the U.S.

Here is the entire album, in one track. It’s beautiful, mostly instrumental.

Daily song: Leonard Cohen – Boogie Street

September 24th, 2008 by julia

The night before last marks my introduction to Leonard Cohen. I was engrossed in a book when our host Jim played the song ‘Boogie Street’.

I put the book down…

closed my eyes…

and absorbed the poetry.

I hope you do the same.

Daily song, yo: CPI – Poetry Is For Faeries

September 23rd, 2008 by julia

CPI is a baller Canadian DJ:

Poetry Is For Faeries is a potentially life-changing CPI mix of abstract, poetic hiphop.

Also check out Chinchillin’. 2 CDs of downtempo, chillout, instrumental hiphop, and other head noddin’ beats.

Daily song: Emancipator – Shook (Mobb Deep/Sigur Rós mashup)

September 22nd, 2008 by julia

Emancipator escaped from the Underground Railroad Chain Gang in the 11th century. He invented the hot air balloon, with which he chartered the Amazon River. He invented wine.

Emancipator found the formula for the crystallization of ice during a quiet Japanese winter. He perfected the art of agriculture. He can climb trees faster than you.

Emancipator bleeds ambrosia. He discovered Iceland. He can breathe underwater.

Emancipator lives in a fortress made of moon rock. His presence attracts songbirds. He can recite all the digits of pi.

…This is a good track. You should probably give it a listen.

Daily song: Daytrotter Sessions

September 21st, 2008 by alison

If you haven’t heard of Daytrotter Sessions you should definitely pay it a visit. They have artists come record in their studios and they post the tracks on their site with some sweet artwork.

I spent a lot of senior year listening to Jaymay after she played at Vassar. I recently came across this track on Daytrotter. It will be on her upcoming EP 10 Under 2, which will consist of ten songs under two minutes. I’m left wanting more but maybe that’s the idea?

What about the Bob.mp3

Dawn Landes is a New York-based musician who hails from Louisville. She caught my ear when I was sifting through a bunch of Daytrotter Sessions.

Daily Song: Katie Sawicki – Moving On; Good Thing

September 20th, 2008 by julia

I first heard Katie Sawicki on the 2008 Falcon Ridge Folk Festival Emerging Artists stage. Her acoustic songs, straight outta Portland, Oregon, remind me of Chris Pureka (who is featured on Time Spent Lost, Katie’s sophomore album released earlier this year).

Daily song(s): Bolo Ram and Love Serenade

September 16th, 2008 by julia

Bolo Ram bestows instant tranquility. Love Serenade = guaranteed grin.

Wah! – Bolo Ram: Wah! sings simple lines of devotion with hip production, mellow grooves and a trippy acoustic band. From her 2003 album Jai Jai Jai.

The Waifs – Love Serenade: Is there a happier song? Our first night here, Jim played for us the West Australian trio called The Waifs. Instant winner. Off The Waifs’ 1998 album Sink Or Swim.

Daily Song: Myriad Harbour by The New Pornographers

September 12th, 2008 by julia

…it’s a great track, released on the New Pornographers’ 2007 album Challengers. I jammed out to Myriad Harbour this morning on the ferry from Athens to Paros, before turning to the Dylan album “Desire” (at which point I fell asleep on the deck of the boat) and Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here” album.
